IP: Whose work has influenced your writing style most?

JS: Back in the day (as in prior to five years ago), I wanted to be a sci-fi/fantasy author. I’d read Anne McCaffrey, Frank Herbert, Michael Crichton, and a boatload of Star Wars Expanded Universe novels. It only seemed natural that I would write in a similar genre.

Then my sister-in-law gave me two Dean Koontz books for my birthday. I wrongly believed that Koontz wrote crime novels so I waited several months before I got around to reading them. When I did, my mind was blown away.

Instead of crime, I learned that Koontz writes supernatural suspense. Fantastic, JS Author Picotherworldly things take place right here in our own world, and I loved it. I made many afternoon trips to the local Borders to add to my growing Koontz collection.

Then a tragic thing happened: Borders went out of business. I bought tons of cheap books while they were clearing out their merchandise, and wouldn’t you know, I couldn’t get anything else in the Dean Koontz section because everything that was left, I owned. Defeated, I wandered off in search of new material and found myself in the Christian fiction section.

I had first heard of Ted Dekker in an ad on Goodreads, and a month before my Borders Going Out of Business excursions, one of my aunts mentioned reading his books. “Why not?” I thought, and bought one of them–Showdown.

I was soon hooked on those as well. Again I found fantastic things happening to characters who live in our world. Later I learned that Ted Dekker is a big Dean Koontz fan. Who’d have thought?

I can’t say that either author has influenced me more than the other. But if you wonder why my stories involve supernatural things happening to ordinary people, you can thank Dean and Ted for that.

IP: What one thing lights up your world?

JS: Call me romantic, but my husband Nathan lights up my life more than anything else. We’ve been together for close to seven years. He’s the one who encouraged me to finish writing my first novel (I think he wanted to know what happened next!). We’ve been through thick and through thin, and I wouldn’t want anyone else at my side as we travel through life together.

IP: Tell us the latest Thai and Chai adventure.

JS Thai Chai

JS: This summer we adopted two cream spotted tabby kittens who came from the same litter: Thai and Chai. Thai is much more laid back than his sister, and Chai likes to push the envelope and do daring cat things such as climbing the curtains and leaping into the top of our bedroom closet and promptly falling out of it because it’s packed full of blankets and sheets. Chai also likes to play hockey with discarded Coke caps, while Thai prefers thwacking toy mice around and eating the fur off of them. I constantly have to get a yardstick and extract both caps and mice from underneath the fridge. They like to attack the yardstick, too.

IP: If WWJD stood for What Would Jennifer Do, what would be the answer to the question?

JS: Jennifer would be very, very anxious about it but would force herself to do it anyway because if she didn’t, she would never succeed. (In this case, it’s promoting her writing via events.)
