Jump a sphere into imagination on March 10, 2015

“Trouble just seems to find me. I don’t go looking for it. It just sniffs me down and before I know it—BAM! Detention, right between the eyes. Too many of those and “hit the road Jack,” expelled. Well, on this fine November morning, trouble’s nose just happened to be on the face of the kid two rows over and three seats up in homeroom. He singled me out from the moment Ms. Plummer stammered, “C-class. This is Donald Dungeon…”

“Macy took Dirk’s hand and led him along the corridor, stepping gingerly around dead bodies.”

Stars border

“I pressed the razor against the scar on my thigh. A line of red beads rose to the surface, shiny and glistening against the white skin. Fascinated, I watched them grow and then merge, forming a long trickle as gravity forced the scarlet line between the ridges of my scars to race toward the ground.”

Stars border

“Bodies staggered toward them, moaning and gurgling, dripping black ooze from multiple wounds. Limping and struggling, bones protruding from flesh-peeled fingers, they groped toward the group of teens.”

Stars border

“I must tell you.” The eerie voice reverberated in the darkness. “I must… I must tell…must tell you.” Echoes overlapped and gnarled together like roots of an ancient elm. Some sounding as distant screams, others as whispers of breath on the ear.”

Stars border

“Quite possibly the most perfect first kiss ever, with the surf at their backs and the stars swimming above, their blood pumped in rhythm with the energy of the night.”

Stars border

“The evil dragon, Dracosphynx, bellowed in rage, rattling the teeth of the strike force. His red hide glistened, covered in shimmering iridescent scales to his chest. Toothy spikes lined his back and tail, and his muscles rippled in exertion.”

Staid pushed up from his stool and stood, emptied his tankard and said, “There is nothing greater than love, Bard.” He set his cup down and poked Manifus in the chest. “You should know this.”

New Release: Servant by J.S. Bailey

JS Servant

Click ad to purchase.

Newly released from Author J.S. Bailey. Servant out November 4th.

Immortal Portals interviewed the author. Get to know J. S. here.

IP: Whose work has influenced your writing style most?

JS: Back in the day (as in prior to five years ago), I wanted to be a sci-fi/fantasy author. I’d read Anne McCaffrey, Frank Herbert, Michael Crichton, and a boatload of Star Wars Expanded Universe novels. It only seemed natural that I would write in a similar genre.

Then my sister-in-law gave me two Dean Koontz books for my birthday. I wrongly believed that Koontz wrote crime novels so I waited several months before I got around to reading them. When I did, my mind was blown away.

Instead of crime, I learned that Koontz writes supernatural suspense. Fantastic, JS Author Picotherworldly things take place right here in our own world, and I loved it. I made many afternoon trips to the local Borders to add to my growing Koontz collection.

Then a tragic thing happened: Borders went out of business. I bought tons of cheap books while they were clearing out their merchandise, and wouldn’t you know, I couldn’t get anything else in the Dean Koontz section because everything that was left, I owned. Defeated, I wandered off in search of new material and found myself in the Christian fiction section.

I had first heard of Ted Dekker in an ad on Goodreads, and a month before my Borders Going Out of Business excursions, one of my aunts mentioned reading his books. “Why not?” I thought, and bought one of them–Showdown.

I was soon hooked on those as well. Again I found fantastic things happening to characters who live in our world. Later I learned that Ted Dekker is a big Dean Koontz fan. Who’d have thought?

I can’t say that either author has influenced me more than the other. But if you wonder why my stories involve supernatural things happening to ordinary people, you can thank Dean and Ted for that.

IP: What one thing lights up your world?

JS: Call me romantic, but my husband Nathan lights up my life more than anything else. We’ve been together for close to seven years. He’s the one who encouraged me to finish writing my first novel (I think he wanted to know what happened next!). We’ve been through thick and through thin, and I wouldn’t want anyone else at my side as we travel through life together.

IP: Tell us the latest Thai and Chai adventure.

JS Thai Chai

JS: This summer we adopted two cream spotted tabby kittens who came from the same litter: Thai and Chai. Thai is much more laid back than his sister, and Chai likes to push the envelope and do daring cat things such as climbing the curtains and leaping into the top of our bedroom closet and promptly falling out of it because it’s packed full of blankets and sheets. Chai also likes to play hockey with discarded Coke caps, while Thai prefers thwacking toy mice around and eating the fur off of them. I constantly have to get a yardstick and extract both caps and mice from underneath the fridge. They like to attack the yardstick, too.

IP: If WWJD stood for What Would Jennifer Do, what would be the answer to the question?

JS: Jennifer would be very, very anxious about it but would force herself to do it anyway because if she didn’t, she would never succeed. (In this case, it’s promoting her writing via events.)

[My husband] asked me what I was reading, and I asked why, and he said, “It’s all sigh, groan, gasp, grrrr, moan…”

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of book one, The Torn. I’ve been anxiously awaiting the next book in the Holding Kate Series from the moment I read the last lines of The Torn. And now that I’ve read book two… O.M.Geeee. SQUEEEEEE! Yes. Yes, I did just go totally fan girl. This is a truly awesome read! So full of twists and turns that kept me guessing. Even when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, LaDonna Cole surprised me with another amazing twist. She certainly kept me on my toes from cover to cover! It’s rare for a sequel to live up to an amazing debut book, but not in this case. This is a fantastic sequel to book one! It was even better than The Torn, because I was already in love with the story and characters. A completely fulfilling read that left me hankering for book 3. I simply cannot wait to see more from this series. LaDonna Cole’s Holding Kate Series grabs you and refuses to let go. I want more, more, more! This is sure to be a hit with both young adults and their parents. Good clean writing that really takes you places in both imagination and heart. Get ready, the spheres are coming… again!
